What Are Online Pokies?
If you’re new to the world of online gambling in Australia, you’ve probably heard the term “pokies” tossed around. Pokies — short for poker machines — are the Australian name for slot machines. They’re the most popular form of casino entertainment both in pubs across the country and online. In fact, Australians are among the most enthusiastic pokies players in the world.
Online pokies work exactly like the machines you’d find at your local RSL or pub, except you can play them from the comfort of your couch, on your commute, or anywhere with an internet connection. They come in thousands of themes — from ancient Egypt and mythology to Aussie wildlife and blockbuster films — and offer features that physical machines simply can’t match, such as progressive jackpots pooled across thousands of players worldwide.
At VOLT, we host over 2,000 online pokies from the world’s leading game providers, giving you an unmatched selection of titles to explore. For the complete picture of everything our platform offers, see our ultimate Australian online casino guide.
How Do Online Pokies Work?
Every online pokie is powered by a Random Number Generator (RNG), a sophisticated algorithm that produces completely random outcomes on every single spin. This means each spin is independent — what happened on the last spin has absolutely no influence on the next one. There’s no such thing as a “hot” or “cold” machine in the mathematical sense; it’s all down to chance.
Here are the core components you’ll encounter:
- Reels: Vertical columns that spin and display symbols. Most modern pokies have 5 or 6 reels, though classic pokies use 3.
- Paylines: Predetermined lines across the reels where matching symbols must land to trigger a win. Traditional pokies may have 10–25 paylines, while modern titles can offer 243, 1,024, or even 117,649 ways to win.
- Symbols: Each pokie has a unique set of symbols with different values. Higher-value symbols pay more when they form winning combinations.
- Wild Symbols: These substitute for other symbols (except scatters) to help complete winning lines. Think of them as a joker in a deck of cards.
- Scatter Symbols: These typically trigger bonus features such as free spins rounds, regardless of their position on the reels.
- Bonus Features: Free spins, multipliers, pick-and-click games, expanding wilds, and cascading reels are just some of the features that make modern pokies so engaging.
Understanding RTP and Volatility
RTP tells you how much of your money the game returns. Volatility tells you how it returns it. Both are critical to choosing the right pokie for your playing style and bankroll.
Two of the most important concepts for any pokies player are RTP (Return to Player) and volatility.
RTP is expressed as a percentage and tells you how much of the total money wagered on a pokie is returned to players over millions of spins. For example, a pokie with a 96% RTP theoretically returns $96 for every $100 wagered. This doesn’t mean you’ll get $96 back every session — it’s a long-term statistical average.
Volatility (also called variance) describes the risk profile of a pokie:
| Volatility Level | Hit Frequency | Payout Size | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Frequent wins | Smaller payouts | Casual players, longer sessions |
| Medium | Balanced | Mix of small & big | Most players |
| High | Less frequent wins | Larger payouts | Thrill-seekers, bigger bankrolls |
You can check the real-time RTP performance of pokies on our Live RTP Tracker, which shows you which games are currently running hot or cold.
Types of Online Pokies
The world of online pokies is incredibly diverse. Here are the main categories you’ll encounter:
- Classic 3-Reel Pokies: Inspired by the original fruit machines, these pokies are simple, fast-paced, and perfect for beginners. They typically feature fruits, bars, and sevens as symbols with straightforward gameplay.
- Video Pokies (5-Reel): The most common type, offering rich graphics, immersive themes, animations, and multiple bonus features. Titles like Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza fall into this category.
- Megaways Pokies: Pioneered by Big Time Gaming, Megaways pokies feature a dynamic reel system where the number of symbols per reel changes on every spin, creating up to 117,649 ways to win. Learn more in our Megaways guide. If you enjoy high-volatility titles, check out our guides to Hacksaw Gaming and No Limit City pokies.
- Progressive Jackpot Pokies: These pokies contribute a small portion of each bet to a growing jackpot pool. Some jackpots reach into the millions of dollars before being won by one lucky punter.
- Cluster Pays Pokies: Instead of traditional paylines, these pokies award wins when clusters of matching symbols connect horizontally or vertically. They often feature cascading mechanics for consecutive wins on a single spin.
How to Choose the Right Pokie
With over 2,000 pokies available at VOLT, choosing where to start can feel overwhelming. Here are our top tips:
- Check the RTP: Look for pokies with an RTP of 96% or higher. You can use our Live RTP page to compare games and see which ones are currently performing above their theoretical average.
- Match volatility to your style: If you prefer frequent small wins and longer play sessions, choose low-to-medium volatility. If you’re chasing big payouts and can handle dry spells, high volatility is your friend.
- Set a bankroll: Decide how much you’re comfortable spending before you start, and stick to it. High-volatility pokies can drain your balance quickly, so adjust your bet size accordingly.
- Try before you buy: Many pokies on VOLT offer demo modes so you can test the gameplay, features, and feel of a game before wagering real money.
- Read the paytable: Every pokie has a paytable that explains symbol values, bonus triggers, and special features. Spending a minute here can significantly improve your understanding.
Before committing real money, use VOLT's demo mode to test any pokie's mechanics and bonus features. It's the smartest way to learn without risk.
